Description: Caii Julii Cæsaris opera omnia. London: sumtibus [sic] editoris excudebant M. Ritchie & J. Sammells; veneunt apud T. Payne, 1790. (2)422; (2)441(1) pp. + an engraved portrait and two double-page engraved maps in Vol. I. Two vols., large 8vo, contemporary red straight-grained morocco, gilt, spines gilt, gilt Greek-key turn-ins, a.e.g. (a trifle rubbed).First edition as edited by Henry Homer; a large-paper copy in a handsome binding of the period. Henry Homer was a talented classicist who studied wth Samuel Parr at Cambridge; this edition of Caesar's work was published a year before his death at the age of 38. "This edition, which is very beautifully printed, and of which there are some sumptuous copies on large paper, is deserving of a place in the student's library, from its extreme correctness." -- Dibdin I, 364. With the early armorial bookplates of John Keate, who in 1809 became one of the most celebrated headmasters of Eton; an inscription here in Keate's hand indicates that this set was presented to him in 1792, when he was 19 and studying at Cambridge ("E dono -- children"). In excellent condition, complete with a portrait and two double-page maps. An uncommon book in any form, and rare on large paper.
