Photo Galleries and Personal Interests
I've collected here links to photograph galleries and
some personal interests.
These gallery pages have text with the images. Older
pages used scanned photographs, pages done before 2001 used Kodak
PhotoCD (PCD), while pages after December 2001 used a digital camera.
- Photos
in Nova Scotia, Canada (1997). Description of a vacation
trip to Nova Scotia. An experiment in scanning 4x6" photos and making
fast-loading pages with a short essay.
- Photos around New York
(2000-2002). A selection of photographs in upper Manhattan and midtown.
Some of the photos come from PhotoCD, while others were taken with a
digital camera. There are some nice shots of the George Washington
Bridge, Washington Heights, Fort Tryon Park, and the Empire State
Building. (I'm very fond of some of the befogged ESB photos.) I will be adding some vintage photos from my personal collection.
- The
Martyrs Monument in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn (at Rootsweb). Photos, links,
essay and timeline about the "Prison Ships Martyrs," P.O.W.'s from the
Revolutionary War buried in present-day Fort Greene Park. (A photograph
from this site was published in the June 2002 VFW Magazine.)
(2000)
- Ossining,
N.Y. (at Rootsweb). Scanned images, notes and links, which I mean to work into an
essay on 19th C Ossining. My father's family lived in Ossining and
vicinity from about the time of New York City's great cholera epidemic
(ca. 1830) until about 1910. (draft)
Photographic Equipment
A few sites on photography or equipment, worth checking
are listed below. I try to link through Photo.net to Adorama, since
Photo.net is a worthwhile free site that needs support.
- Photo.net. Interesting site.
(Particularly interesting when you realize it's a database.) Camera
reviews are increasingly a little thin.
- Steve's Digicams
has good reviews of current digital cameras. Recommended. (Easier to
access via Google search.)
- Imaging Resource.
Good reviews. Recommended. (Easier to access via Google search.)
- DigiCamera Resource Page
(DCRP/DCResource.com). An excellent source of careful reviews.
(Jeff Keller). (Easier to access via Google search.)
- Digital Photography Review
(DPReview.com). (Easier to access via Google search.)
- Amateur Opinion. It's important to hear what "the rest of
us" have to say. I often check the following places:
- Amazon's feedback of photo
equipment for sale on its site can be quite interesting and often turn
up serious defects or quality problems with equipment.
- Epinions. If you're
spending a lot of money or need more help deciding, check Epinions. A
lot of people vent here. (For a real hair-curler, read the car reviews.)
In case you're wondering, I prefer Canon. I've had a Powershot S100
(Digital Elph) since late 2000, and I love it.
Some Personal Interests
A place to keep information on some hobbies for easy
off-site reference when traveling.
Books, Used and Rare
Some useful links for buying
and learning about used and rare books.
Some links relating to classical music.
- Music
Collection. My CD music collection. (Large file) An experiment
in running Foxpro reports into HTML files. "Spaghetti" HTML!
(1998-2000) (With so many CD's, I sometimes needed to check my
collection when not home.)
- WQXR-FM.
(96.3 FM NYC) Classical station of the New York Times. Sadly,
the last great classical music station in New York City. (The NPR affiliates and WVBR only play classical music sometimes.)
Opera
Additional links for buying music:
- CD Universe. Music CDs.
- CD Now. Music CDs.
- Music Boulevard
- Andante online. Good
resource for classical music and opera. Originally a magazine, this
site tries to be comprehensive and has even become a recording label.
Portions require membership.
- MusicalAmerica. Online
version of print journal Musical America with
comprehensive news coverage and reviews.
- ClassicsToday. Online daily
journal with comprehensive news coverage and reviews.
- Glenn Gould Archive
at the National Library of Canada. Includes unreleased private and
studio recordings for listening.
- Aria Database.
Personal website of Robert Glaubitz and a collaborative labor of love:
"an actively growing collection of information about opera and operatic
arias." Has good links.
- Classical
Music Web Ring. UK-based and sometimes a grab-bag, but good.
- HiFi.com. Music equipment.
Excellent recommendations and ratings. Tends to carry the best
equipment, rather than attempt to be comprehensive. Allied with
Cambridge Soudworks.
- Buy.com. I've found some decent
computer and music equipment here. Useful for price comparison shopping.
-
Song Words.
Searchable database of songs. (Tends to be pop.)
- Jazz online.
Genealogy is now one of the most popular activities on
the web. Here are gathered pages relating to studying genealogy on the
web, using genealogy software (emphasis on TMG), and my branch of the
Romaine Family. In trying to differentiate members of my branch, I've
sometimes ended up writing capsule biographies. These pages are offsite
at Rootsweb.
- My
Genealogy links. These are off-site links sorted by topics such
as Romaine/Romine family, general genealogy, technical and software
information, The Master Genealogist (TMG) software, and New York State
and New Jersey research.
- Romaine
family research. I will eventually be loading information on my
line and some biographical sketches of interesting Romaines; some
tentative Romaine family notes are online here.
- Biographies
of some individual Romaines.
